Beautiful nature, tame vegetation
and mild climate, ancient culture
and civilization tradition from
Roman and Greek times up to these
days are characteristics of this
island. Ancient Arva, Arba, Arbia
or Arbitana, Italian Arbe and Croatian
Rab derives probably from the Illyrian
Arb meaning dark, green, forested.
One of the nicest holm-oak areas
and the greenest area of the island
is the area of Kalifront - Suha
Punta.
Northeastern part of the island
of Rab is rocky. The island of Rab
has pleasant and mild winters and
hot summers. An average air temperature
in summer reaches 26°C and in winter
10°C. Hilly chain of Kamenjak (400
m) protects some parts of the island
from cold northeast winds. That
is the reason that area temperature
almost never lowers under 0°C.
Numerous churches and bell-towers
and Gothic and Renaissance palaces,
of respected patricians, characterize
this beautiful island. That ancient
stone construction method makes
a unique environment while richly
decorated portal and narrow streets
fill with admiration every visitor.
Rab with its natural beauty and
deep-blue sea, has numerous tourist
facilities, like comfortable hotels,
camps, private accommodation with
modern apartments and rooms, excellent
gastronomic offer in restaurants
with maritime and continental specialties,
aperitifs, night bar, café bars,
trendy discotheque, etc.
During summer nights, on numerous
terraces perform various dancing
orchestra, folk dancers, and harmony-singing
groups with authentically dalmatian
and littoral melodic expression.
Numerous coves and marinas are suitable
for sailing and nautical tourism.
With ideal nature conditions there
is opportunity for various sport
and recreational activities. English
architect T.G. Jackson (1887) affirmed:
"Unusual old medieval town,
seems like remembrance, not a reality
… among all small Dalmatian towns,
for my liking, no one is more charming"
